Description
As difficult as it is to describe the contents and the general looks of the 3D animation called "Skopje 2014," it is even more difficult to make a cut in the media earthquake and their presentations caused by the announcement for the re-definition of "Makedonija" Square in Skopje. Although it is difficult to imagine a person with averagely developed senses, average education, and average general culture who can confirm to like the "Skopje 2014" project "generally and totally", aside from the "Liberty Square" organization the strongest criticisms arrive from the opposition bloc. On the other side of the barricades there appear some weird NGOs on which behalf mainly eminent artists and authors make presentations and somehow pathetically try to stand behind the defense of the new system of values promoted by this project. The architectural guild is silent. The sociologists are silent. One of the architects with whom we had a contact while preparing this text says that the issue has long ago escaped out of expert observation, and has become a pure political issue. In this sense, he refused to speak publicly about the (non)quality of the offered solutions because whichever observation he makes he will be placed either in the one or in the other bloc. A professor in sociology, who also remains anonymous, analyzes the defense of the project. For him, the most symptomatic of all is that the defense is reduced to empty phrases like "You were doing nothing but stealing", "Why did you not build anything", or "It is better to build something than build nothing" ... In fact, this is a classical replacement of theses, fogging the otherwise purely worked out spot for the vision of the square. Those who come out with the dignity of their work and name (Tome Adzievski, Danilo Kocevski, Aljosa Simjanovski, Borjan Canev ...), according to our interlocutor, in their attempts to defend what can essentially not be defended, act like caricatures, that is as if they themselves do not believe in what they say. The argument for this are the statements of the type "Going back to old Skopje", "End to socialist architecture",: We will not be ashamed to invite Meryl Steep to shoot a film here", "Nearly all public personalities who found it necessary to invest their names and surnames in this nebulous project are, in one or the other way, in fiscal relations with the Government, orchestrating on the square" ... Essentially, this project is demonstrating in full the corruptive system in which we live. On the one hand, there is the fear from labeling, and on the other they are recruiting on the side for which they believe to be able to procure some benefit to them, or at least enable them come to a project.
